Kaupapa
Our goal is to work collaboratively to marry mātauranga Māori and science disciplines to research all taonga throughout Murihiku, including te moana taonga (ocean species). Tangata whenua have a unique understanding of te au turoa (the natural world). We are forging impactful partnerships to cultivate robust research programmes across Murihiku. These initiatives will strengthen conservation efforts and foster effective strategies for our taonga species to flourish.
Taonga Research facility
Taonga Research is investigating the development and sustainability of a dedicated taonga research facility in Murihiku. Stage one will progress the following:
- Investigate suitable locations within Murihiku, including the Central Lakes District, that could either be repurposed or integrated into an existing facility for a dedicated taonga research facility.
- Identify key focus areas for research in the initial stages. Wai-Māori (freshwater) taonga have been identified for initial research including kanakana (NZ Lamprey), kākahi (NZ freshwater mussel), kōura, (freshwater crayfish), tuna (eel) and īnanga (whitebait species). Long-term, we will look to include other taonga from the whenua (land) and moana (sea) including manu (birds) and kaimoana (seafood).
- Research commercial activities or businesses that can integrate with or occur alongside the research centre.
- Identify and engage with similar service providers including potential foundational partners and funders, other Papatipu Rūnanga, iwi and hapū, relevant central and local government agencies, and key research organisations.
- Investigate potential funding opportunities and partners both nationally and internationally, including arrangements that are publicly funded, privately funded and public-private partnerships.
